Hiphop Reality: A Theory by KRS-One
KRS-One’s Hip Hop Masterclass lecture at Kingston University in the U.K was first posted by the Youtube channel GotKush Tv in 2017. This audio essay is a summary of: KRS-One’s theory from the 2017 lecture that Hip Hop is not only a culture, but a way of learning and knowing, his story of the birth of hip hop and his concept of Hiphop reality. PLEASE BE SURE TO WATCH THE FULL ORIGINAL 2 HOUR LECTURE WHEN YOU GET A CHANCE, I WILL NEVER DO IT JUSTICE!! The purpose of this breakdown is to challenge systemically Eurocentric paradigms in academia, specifically Philosophy, Sociology and Anthropology, and promote KRS-One's theories as RADICAL and essential course material that should be taught in schools and a part of everyday discourse. Featuring My Brother's Keeper 617
Featuring My brother’s Keeper 617, a non-profit based out of Dorchester, created to provide mentoring to young men and boys in the Boston community aged 8 and up. The goal is to show the youth that they can make choices that will increase academic growth and professional opportunities. By pursuing these opportunities, they will grow to become an asset to the community and leaders of the next generation. MBK617 @mybrotherskeeper617 , was founded in 2014 when six men raised in Dorchester came together to make a change in the neighborhood (not to be confused with Obamas My Brothers Keeper Alliance).....Having grown up in the neighborhood and experienced the struggle from Boston's streets, these six men were uniquely familiar with the pressure to go down the wrong path. My interview with Mario & Tony begins with Mario asking how my moms doing because no big surprise, each of us in the interview are related in someway (that’s being Cape Verdean in Boston for you). We go on to speak in depth about the immigrant experience, gang violence & how MBK aims to expose the community to more opportunities in life. From snowboarding, to baseball games at Fenway Park, to starting & running a business MBK does so much ! @mbk617 www.mbk617.org Music by Blessin @blessinindisguise and Lubiggz @Bahnanabites For updates on new episodes of This is Not Reality follow @ambersafro www.ambersafro.com/thisisnotreality shorturl.at/ruDJP

This is Not Reality FT. Bella Noka
In the latest episode of This is Not Reality I had a conversation with Bella Noka, an activist and member of the Narragansett Tribe located in what we now call Rhode Island. In 2003, members of the Narragansett tribe were attacked and arrested in a “raid” of a tax free smoke shop on their land. On that day, the Narragansett chief sachem, the medicine man, tribal police officers, Bella Noka, her children and her husband who was the Councilman were bombarded by over 50 police officers, brutally attacked and arrested on “disorderly conduct” charges. A federal judge later claimed that the tribe had been operating the smoke shop illegally and that the state had the right to tax sales of cigarettes on tribal land. I am so grateful that Bella chose to recount such a traumatic event in order to educate my audience on the concept of tribal sovereignty and demystify aboriginal culture. Bella speaks on some of the issues that tribes continue to face and the work she’s done across causes and communities to combat white supremacy. From human trafficking, to police brutality, to environmental justice and more. I am a 2nd generation immigrant to this country-- Standing Rock was one of the first times in MY lifetime that the issues of aboriginal people were at the forefront of public discourse, and with this interview I hope to keep these issues & conversations going. Available on Spotify, Youtube, Apple Podcasts & my website. To learn more about the Narragansett Tribe and ways to support them visit: http://narragansettindiannation.org/#

This Is Not Reality Ft. Shimmy
Amber catches up with Shimmy, (Ernst Jean-Jacques) a Boston based creative and activist who was wrongfully accused of and arrested for the assault of an elderly woman at a counter protest of a Trump rally in Swampscott MA, last December. "Not only was this entire interaction caught on video, the aggressor was also filmed admitting to a police officer that she instigated the altercation unprovoked because his dancing was “making her mad”. The aggressor is not facing repercussions, despite the video evidence and admission of guilt to the Swampscott officer. Since the arrest, Shimmy has received threats on social media and has been suspended from work without pay for the duration of the court proceedings. Shimmy quickly hired a legal team that put out a press release on his behalf, detailing the true events of the incident; that press release has since been reshared thousands of times online. Videos and photos of the incident have been posted all over Tik tok and Instagram. And while some traditional media outlets have chimed in, others have chosen to stay silent or misrepresent the case. In January, Swampscott police finally announced an internal investigation, claiming that they could have handled the situation more constructively. Still Shimmy awaits pre-trial on Feb. 24th and for the charges to be dropped. Listen to the full episode to learn more about the true events of Dec.12th and to learn about all of the important work Shimmy has done, and continues to do for creatives and everyday people through the Freedom Fighters Coalition. If we are not vocal about injustice, we can be easily silenced ---- and we won’t let that happen. @shimmymakeishhappen @fccoc2020 @ambersafro

Subscribe to #TheMUSEUM TV! https://t.co/B2dQW1Sppp All Inquiries: TheMuseumTV@Gmail.Com Look. We’ve been talking about The Black Cotton Club for months now, mentioning how the vibe is unlike what Most event goers in Boston have seen. An actual fruitful event for creatives to network at and build. Can’t really do that at a concert show. Just make sure you enjoy that time... Granted there is music playing, this environment is much better suited for your networking and being apart of a growing community. Just our honest opinion from our time spent detailing the state of affairs in #Boston/#MA. So, that being said, we had the Creator of The Black Cotton Club stop by to tell Ambers, in her OWN words, what The #BlackCottonClub is from having birthed this experience. She also mentions the psychology behind starting the event (which is helpful for other event planners honestly) as well as the expansion planned to take the experience to #ATL in #August & #NY in #September! #AnInchADay right? Inner City Circle Panel at The Strand Theater
Hosted by Amber and Daughter of Contrast , creators of the Hoodgrown Aesthetic podcast Panelists: Larry Pierce Rocky Cotard Rixy Fz Videographer: Annielly Camargo We spoke to intergenerational Boston based artists about the community, their successes, and struggles in the field. Get to know these artists and the range of experiences for artists of color in Boston. Panel streaming LIVE June 21 6pm-9pm, tune in on Instagram and Facebook. Inner City Circle is a multi-generational, multi-disciplinary exhibition that aims to forge a bridge between established, mid-career and emerging Boston artists. These communities are often close in proximity yet far from unified, due to disparities in resources and recognition. The seasoned artists of Inner City Circle have created their own opportunities for decades, but with a lack of steady recognition and support for artists in Dorchester and Roxbury the resources and accolades generated have not made the impact they could have on the emerging artists of today. The curators behind Inner City Circle propose that if these artists had a place to gather and share their work side by side, they would experience the kind of tradition and infrastructure that more affluent communities enjoy. It’s time to recognize the great tradition of visual art in the Dorchester/Roxbury area and the immense potential of its future. This show is a collaborative curatorial effort between Hoodgrown Aesthetic, a podcast created by Amber Torres and Althea “Daughter of Contrast” Bennett that tells the story of 21st-century artists of color living in Boston and abroad; Mfalme Kenyatta, prolific artist and gallery manager at the AfroCaribbean Museum on Washington St. in Dorchester; and the Dorchester Art Project, a community-driven art space in Fields Corner;
